Great, Wide beautiful world
With the wonderful water round you curled
And the wonderful grass upon your breast
World, you are beautifully dressed.
Planet Earth, my home, my place
The wonderful air is over me,
And the wonderful wind is shaking the tree,
It walks on water, and whirls the mills,
And talks to itself on the tops of hills.
You… friendly Earth, how far do you go,
With the wheatfields that nod and the rivers that flow,
With cities and gardens, and cliffs, and isles,
And people upon you for thousands of miles.
Ah, you are so great, and I am so small,
I tremble to think of you, World at all,
And yet, when I said my blessings today,
A whisper inside me, seemed to say,
“You are more than the Earth, though you are such a dot,
You can LOVE and think, and the Earth cannot”
The ‘moon’ tried peeking through my curtains,
I can hear, the the’wind’… brush through the trees,
Pretty stars wink ‘and’ blink me goodnight…..
& yet, ‘still I do not’ fall asleep.
The Rain dances on my window pane
The night air, tip -toes on my face,
I snuggle up tight, ‘and talk myself tired’…
But my brain isn’t keepin the pace.
Why won’t ‘it’ switch off?
peculiar, how odd,
that my thoughts just cannot access The’ land of ‘the’ nod.
How bizarre, quite a thing, to struggle with the mind.
It wants to function constantly -
now that’s just a tad unkind.
I wonder what goes on up there, while cogs spin turn ‘and’ whirl,
Can’t you find the off switch yet?
I’m such a tired little girl?
3.40am, when the ‘moon goes to bed’
and the bright morning sun,
will ‘be’ up there instead,
how awfully, frightfully, strange and unglued,
that my eyes haven’t shut -
not an inch, haven’t moved.
